ASSISTANT HORTICULTURIST
The Assistant Horticulturist will report to the on-site Lead Horticulturist, and will use horticultural skills/knowledge to enhance each client’s garden in the most effective way. The position is based in Watertown, MA with daily travel to our gardens throughout the area including: Newton, Belmont, Cambridge, Arlington, Somerville Lexington, and Concord. You must have a reliable car to use for travel between work sites as well as take work tools home.
This is a full-time, seasonal position. Work hours vary from 30-40 hours per week. Our season begins in March/April and ends in December.
This is a physically demanding job and requires working in most weather conditions: heat, cold, and rain. Our ideal candidate loves hard work, getting their hands dirty, has a great eye for detail, and is passionate about creating healthy and beautiful ecosystems.
Main Responsibilities
Development in and use of Horticulture skills: hand-weeding, hand-pruning shrubs and small trees, planting, fertilizing, and controlling for pests/diseases.
Landscaping duties such as shoveling, hauling and laying compost and mulch
Able and willing to learn from the Lead on-site and follow directions
Assist in creating and planting gardens for clients that also help local wildlife and pollinators thrive
Position can also include Garden Design, if candidate has design knowledge and skills
Qualifications
1+ years of horticulture, fine gardening or landscaping experience
Have a reliable car to use in order to travel to/from/between work sites and be able to take work tools home
Background in horticulture, plant science or similar field preferred
Be physically able to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in hot, cold, or wet conditions
LEAD HORTICULTURIST
The Lead Horticulturist will use advanced horticultural skills/knowledge to enhance each client’s garden in the most effective way, while also providing leadership and guidance to Assistants on-site.
